CREDITS/DEBITS GAME

Materials:

If you are using an Everything Math Deck, either remove the blue 11-20 cards or keep them but mark the odd numbers with a "+" to show that they are "credits."

If you are using a deck of playing cards, either remove the face cards or keep them but mark the jacks with the numbers 11-14, the queens with 0, and the kings with 15-18.

Directions:

Pretend you are an accountant for a new business.  Your job is to keep track of the company's "bottom line."  You will do this by recording the debits and credits that are reported to you.  Credits add to your bottom line.  Debits subtract from your bottom line.

  1. Shuffle the deck and lay it facedown between you and your partner.
  2. The black numbered cards are the "credits," and the blue or red numbered cards are the "debits."
  3. Each player begins with a bottom line of +$10.
  4. Players take turns.  When it is your turn, draw a card.  The card tells you the dollar amount and whether it is a credit or debit to the bottom line.
  5. Record the result on the recording sheet.
  6. At the end of 10 draws each or at the end of the playing time, whichever comes first, the partner with the most money (or the least amount of "negative" dollars) is the winner of the round.
