Object of the Game:

To get from a "starting number" to 10,000 or as close as possible by using each of the four operations--addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division--once.

One-Player Game:

  1. Form a starting number.  Pick any number from 1 to 12.  Cube it.
    Example:  Pick 5.  Cube it:  5*5*5 = 125.
                   125 is the starting number.
  2. Enter the starting number in your calculator.
  3. Pick a number.  Add, subtract, multiply, or divide it with your starting number.
    Example:  Pick 100.  Multiply it with your starting number.
                   125*100 = 12,500.
  4. Pick a different number.  Add, subtract, multiply, or divide it with your result in Step 3.  Use a different operation from the one in Step 3.
    Example:  Pick 2.  Divide the result in Step 3 by 2.
                   12,500/2 = 6250.
  5. Continue to pick numbers and do operations until you have used each of the 4 operations once.  You can do the operations in any order, but do each operation only once.  You must pick a different number for each operation.

Before you start, decide whether to choose numbers to add, subtract, multiply, and divide from Level 1 or Level 2.  (Level 2 is harder.)

Level 1:  any number except 0

Level 2:  only numbers from 2 to 100

For each game, record what you did.

Two Player Game:

Players choose the level and the number of rounds in a game before the start of the game.  To begin each round:  One player chooses the starting number; the other player enters it in the calculator and tries to get as close to 10,000 as possible.  Then the players switch roles to finish the round.

Scoring:  Find the difference between your final result and 10,000 for each round.  At the end of the game, find your total score.  The player with the lower total score wins the game.
